Campaign for better access to Southcote Linear Park

Southcote Linear Park is one of our most peaceful local green areas that we can use to relax and enjoy. However, access to the Linear Park is sometimes difficult and potentially unsafe. The pressure and speed of the traffic can be hazardous. The pathway ot Burghfield Road is narrow and barely wide enough for pedestrians, let alone buggies and dogs. For a number of years Southcote councillors have worked to improve the area and make it safer for walkers.

Southcote Councillors have conducted an extensive consultation of the area surrounding Burghfield Road, Vine Crescent, Holybrook Crescent, Underwood Road and Lea Close in order ot get the views from residents who live close to Linear Park and probably use the area for walking the most.

We consulted on creating a better access from a piece of unused land at the eastern end of Lea Close, next to Burghfield Road. We asked whether residents would be in favour of creating hedges and a green area with the installation of kissing gates to stop motor cycles and mini motos causing a nuisance in Lea Close. We have had an overwhelming response in favour of calling on Reading Borough Council to improve the access. Some residents rightly pointed out the potential for traffic problems in Lea Close and we agree that parked vehicles from walkers could be a problem. Southcote Councillors will be meeting with the council to put forward residents views and we are confident the area can be improved.
