Education and Children's Scrutiny Panel

As part of my role as a Lead Councillor for Children's Services I am made accountable for the decisions and actions the Children's Services Directorate has taken. One way of being made accountable is by the Education and Children's Services Scrutiny Panel which took place tonight.

The Panel discussed safeguarding performance and the Panel noted the continuing progress that has been made in child protection visits, reducing agency staff and the improving number of Initial and Core assessments of children that are being identified as in need of protection from the public, police and teachers. Whilst it is good to hear about progress, it is important that councillors continuing to monitor safeguarding children to ensure permanent progress has been made. Reading has invested a lot of time, resources and money in ensuring all of Reading's children are safe and everything possible is done to protect children and young people from harm. This administration has been criticised for increased funding for child protection, but we make no apologies for prioritising protecting Reading's children and we will do what it takes to make Reading Social Care one of the best in the country.
