I blame the referee, he should have blown the final whistle at half time and we would be preparing for our trip to Wembley. I don't like cliches that much but it was definitely a game of two halves. The Royals were as excellent in the first half as Aston Villa were poor and Reading deservedly took a two goal lead at half time. However, whilst the atmosphere at the Mad Stad was magic we knew the Villa players would get a rollicking by Martin O'Neill and would come at us hard in the second half.
You cannot apportion any blame on any Reading player for the Villa goals. For twelve minutes at the start of the second half Aston Villa were quite simply superb and whilst we were able to defend up the pitch and keep the Villa forwards at bay in the first forty minutes, we were forced back at the start of the second half by Villa who attacked at pace in large numbers, not many teams would be able to withstand this footballing assault. Let us remember that this is the team that has beaten Chelsea twice and Man utd this season, Aston Villa are a top club.
I was proud to be a Royal on Sunday. The way we outplayed them in the first half and the way we nearly came back after conceding three quick goals. So the dream is over for another year or eighty three. Lets concentrate on beating Derby on Wednesday and staving off relegation.
