Reading Borough Council Press Release

Rigdeway Primary School is celebrating a positive Ofsted report after it was graded a “good” school.

The Reading primary school was previously graded “satisfactory” after its previous Ofsted inspection. Now the school’s leadership is aiming to improve further and become an outstanding school.

The school was graded “good” in all assessed categories: Achievement of pupils; Quality of Teaching; Behaviour and Safety of Pupils; Leadership and Management.

The report heaps praise at the school for its “consistently good or better” standard of teaching and it also says that pupils go on to make good progress.

The inspectors also highlighted the good behaviour of pupils: “Pupils work well with each other and are confident talking to one another about their work. They are polite and friendly.”

The report reserves special praise for the Governors at Ridgeway for supporting the school’s leadership: “The Governors understand the challenges that the school has faced and fully support the leadership in having high expectations about improving the quality of teaching.”

John Ennis, Reading Borough Council’s Lead Councillor for Education and Children’s Services, said: “We are delighted that Ridgeway School’s hard work has paid off and it’s just another example of Reading’s schools improving. Reading now has 77% of all its schools (78% when you include academies) graded “good” or “outstanding” by Ofsted. Congratulations to Colin Lavelle and his team and we look forward to working with the school’s leadership in future.”

Head of Ridgeway Primary School, Colin Lavelle, said: “It was a pleasure to have the hard work and success of the whole school community recognised by the Ofsted team. We have sought to create a unique brand of quality, yet fun education, and the fact that we are the only school in British history to get a mention for its emu speaks volumes about our ethos – that is why we are ‘The village school in the city’.”
