Reading Borough Council Press Release

A £500,000 Council plan to tackle the pothole problem across the borough begins on Monday next week (July 29).

The first of two new crews will be out on the streets of Reading from Monday July 29th, specifically tasked with filling in the potholes caused by a combination of the high levels of rainfall last summer followed by the cold winter. A second crew will be operational within the next fortnight.

This work is in addition to the £1.2 million project to resurface 17 main roads across the town, which began on Monday this week (July 22).

The pothole work programme - which will take up to a year to complete - involves switching all existing highway maintenance gangs to concentrate on filling in potholes. Additional personnel are now in place to ensure that other highways work can continue to be carried out.

Work begins on Monday on the A class road network, which will be followed by B and C class roads as outlined in the report to Policy Committee on June 10 (see link below).

Councillor Tony Page, Lead Member for Strategic Environment, Transport and Planning, said:

“I’m pleased - as will local residents be - to see this project begin in earnest. Combined with the significant works underway to resurface 17 main roads and 35 residential streets, we expect it to make a significant difference to road surfaces for motorists, cyclists, motorbikes and pedestrians.

“It is no secret that Reading’s roads, like those of many local authorities, were badly affected by the adverse weather conditions last year. The flexibility to shift staff around so that they can respond to priorities like this has only been possible through the Council having a strong in-house resource, and I hope that residents will soon begin to notice the effect of these improvements works.”
