Southcote clean up this Saturday

Reading Borough Council Press Release
Community groups and local people living in Southcote are taking part in a major clear up of the area this weekend.
The clear up, on Saturday (14th), will include cutting back overgrown bushes and litter picking. Two of the council’s refuse trucks will be on hand to cart off people’s rubbish but won’t be able to accept electrical goods, rubble and paints or oil. There will also be a motorised sweeper for garage areas, alleyways and car parks.
It’s being run by the council’s housing and streetcare teams who are keen to hear from volunteers willing to help. It’ll start at 9.30am at Southcote Community Centre and run until 2.30pm but people can volunteer for as long or short a period as they like. There will be tea, coffee and biscuits served at 9.30am and after the event and a community lunch at Southcote Community Centre.
The event follows a series of similar clear ups organised by the Council teams. At Coley Park 7.5 tonnes of rubbish was cleared. In Dee Road 10 tonnes was sorted and in Hexham Road four tonnes was cleared up. The rubbish included videos, toys, old furniture and mattresses.
Liz Terry, Reading’s Lead Councillor for Neighbourhoods, said: “This has been a really success initiative run over the summer and demonstrates real partnership working between local residents, housing and streetcare teams.
“This is about taking pride in Reading and places where people live.”
