In football the line between success and failure is extremely thin. I have seen the Royals play well and lose, but last night it was all about the points. A 90th minute penalty doesn't get much closer after Reading huffed and puffed all night. The difference between now and last month is that the Reading players have grown in confidence, particularly Shane Long, who took the penalty with calm and assurance. Another difference is that character is being shown by the players. Previous games under Brendan Rodgers, Reading played with good, skillful football but were "bullied" or knocked off by teams too physical for the young players. With the new loan signings The Royals have some experience and metal to go all the way until the end and this surely bodes well for the relegation fight ahead. We are still not out of it but this result is massive and to be under estimated.
Saturday's game against West Brom in the FA Cup 5th Round has oddly come at the right time. With the improvement in results in the league and Reading growing in confidence McDermott can send out his best team with nothing to lose. This should be a bit of a party day for us, the crowd and players should enjoy enjoy themselves and you never know Wembley is getting closer. I fancy at least a draw as West Brom also see the League as a priority and they may put out a second team, as long as Simon Cox doesn't play!
