Reading Single Homeless Project

As a member of the Council of Management (COM) of Reading Single Homeless Project (RSHP)I attended the regular COM meeting tonight. RSHP is the only independent registered charity in Reading that deals with homeless and vulnerable people and assists them in obtaining services such as drug and alcohol counselling, debt advice, employment and training assistance as well as providing accommodation in a number of houses throughout the Reading area.

We had several excellent reports from hard working staff and the Chief Executive, Ian Caren, who is totally committed to assisting vulnerable groups in Reading improve their well-being. Ian reported that a number of tenants are progressing well in the RSHP homes and that the Reading Borough Council grants and finances from what is called Supporting People are well spent and resources put to good use.

RSHP have recruited a mental health worker and have a number of highly trained workers who advise, support and counsel people who are homeless with acute needs. There is a successful Alcohol project that is assisting tenants from abstaining from alcohol to the extent where they may be able to move to independent living. I particularly find the allotment project valuable in enabling tenants grow their own vegetables throughout the year.

RSHP has just secured money from the National Lottery grant to assist homeless people deal with emotional intelligence that is a big factor in raising self esteem and improving self worth.

I am proud to be involved in such an active vibrant charity that provides 92 beds in 16 different properties throughout Reading where it supports, empowers and transforms homeless people's lives. RSHP rely on grants from Supporting People , Reading Borough Council and from donations from the public at well organised events.
