Question to Full Council Sure Start and Tory proposals

There is a question to next weeks full Council from a member of the public concerned about the possible closures of the Sure Start projects if the Tories get into power, either locally or nationally.

Surestart Centres

Would the Lead Councillor for Children's Services comment on Conservative claims of support for SureStart Centres, in the context of reports in the press of the views of the Conservative Chair of the Education & Children's Services Scrutiny Panel?

This question is raised because of a document written by Tory councillor, Mark Ralph, questioning the role of Sure Start and other good projects such as Street Games, and MEND, an initiative for children. Whilst not offering any policies of note to contribute to the progress of children's health cllr Ralph believes that contraception should not be used as it is "a passport to promiscuity" and because children reside in places like Southcote and Whitley they are poor.

The Tories offer nothing but cuts in a rush to offer tax breaks for the wealthy whilst criticizing the council and government for trying to bring children out of poverty.
