Sensory Room for Disabled Children Academy Sport

Press Release – Sensory Room Launch, Academy Sport

A new sensory room for disabled children and young people is to open at AcademySport Leisure Centre.

On Tuesday, March 30th, a grand opening of the fantastic addition to the leisure centre in Northumberland Avenue will take place. Families are welcome to attend between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.

The new facility is funded by Reading’s Aiming High Partnership for Disabled Children.

The sensory room will boast colour switching mode lights, bubble tubes, fibre optics, liquid effect wheels, a soft seating area, mirror ball and children’s music.

The equipment has many benefits for disabled youngsters as sensory rooms can help them develop language skills, improve hand and eye co-ordination and increase awareness. Organised activities in the room will be used to help sensory dysfunction.

It provides stimulating opportunities that will enhance children and young people’s awareness of their environment through the senses of sight and hearing, while helping stimulate their motor skills.

The multi-sensory experience is also effective in helping block out distractions, helping youngsters remain focused and achieve calmness.

Some of the other benefits include a reduction in tension and increased relaxation.

Graeme Hoskin, Lead Councillor for Culture and Sport, said: “The new sensory room is a fantastic new addition to the facilities at AcademySport Leisure Centre and I’m looking forward to seeing it being used by many children and young people.”

John Ennis, Lead Councillor for Children’s Services, said: “The equipment within the sensory room at the leisure centre will benefit lots of disabled youngsters, improving their senses, co-ordination and overall awareness. It’s a great asset for Reading.

Reading Borough Council’s Culture and Sport Development Team is one of the main providers for short breaks under the Aiming High for Disabled Children initiative.

It delivers the Aiming High Sport, Leisure and Culture programme, which provides children and young people who have additional needs with the opportunity to take part in various sessions.

The sensory room will be open for individual visits, bookings and group bookings. Call AcademySport for more information on (0118) 937 0270.
