Granville Road campaigning

One of my favourite moments of this election campaign was when I went around the Granville Road flats discussing politics with tenants. I met with some working single parents who wanted to better themselves and who were not as the stereotype suggested living on benefits. These single working parents were perplexed about the Tory married couple tax breaks and they did not understand why they were not being included in the chance to be rewarded for improving their living standards. Many single parents felt they weren't being helped enough by the political parties to raise their children and go out to work. I agreed with one mother who felt that there was a glass ceiling and that she may have been better off on benefits but that she wanted to contribute to society and that she had achieved a good job with career prospects. I believed the best party for parents is Labour due to the securing of Child Tax Credits and Working Family Tax Credits that could be under threat from a future Tory Government that is limiting Child Tax Credits to below a certain level of income.

I met with African families in the flats who want a better life for their children and were questioning about the local education situation with schools.

I noted that Granville Road has had some improvements to it such as new fire doors and flooring and the cleaning is a better standard. However, I reported to the council the shopping trolleys left outside the blocks and the pigeons nesting in the higher floors which is a problem for some tenants.Labour is the only party to have consistently campaigned for the tenants in the blocks, not just at election times but throughout the year and we will keep on acting as advocates for tenants in Granville Road and other blocks to ensure that tenants get the best deal possible for their rents.
