Emergency Maintenance Works in Friar Street Reading
11/02/2013 Reading Borough Council Press Release
Emergency repairs to the road surface on Friar Street in Reading Town Centre mean that it will be closed for up to five days, from Monday February 18, for essential works to take place. Following the prolonged periods of wet weather, coupled with the snow and ice in mid-January, several stretches of the busy town centre route are significantly damaged. It means Friar Street between Greyfriars Road and Station Road - has to be temporarily closed in order to carry out the essential repairs that are necessary.
The emergency works are expected to take up to a maximum of 5 working days to complete. Work begins on Monday 18th February 2013 at 8am and is expected to continue through until 11pm on Friday February 22nd. Buses which use Friar Street will be diverted and temporary bus stops will be provided. Notices advising passengers of the temporary changes will be placed on street notices this week. Bus passengers are also being advised to go to the relevant bus operators websites, including www.reading-buses.co.uk for more information. The Council will be in direct contact with all of the businesses that will also be affected, including in relation to their delivery arrangements. Emergency access will be maintained at all times.
Tony Page, Reading's Lead Councillor for Regeneration, Transport and Planning, said: 'These are essential repairs which need to be carried out quickly to a busy town centre route. The quickest and safest way for the Council to carry out these works is to close the road and put in temporary diversions. We apologise in advance for any disruption and the obvious inconvenience this will cause.' The work will involve digging out and reconstructing the road surface, adjusting manhole covers and drains, replacing road markings and repairing road gullies and surface water connections as necessary. There will also be the temporary loss of one disabled parking bay for the duration of the works. Please contact Reading Borough Council's Highways Team on 0118 937 2113 should you require any further
